CHAPTER 9

Mallow and Greta are on their way to Rogers Boat Rentals. They aren’t talking to each other because Mallow is in deep thought.

Suddenly, Greta shouts, “LOOK OUT!”

Mallow swerves to avoid hitting the old gypsy man standing in the middle of the road. Mallow pulls over to the side of the road and looks straight ahead.

The old man is in a daze and doesn’t move or blink an eye as the SUV almost hits him.

Greta is startled and breathing heavily. She looks at Mallow, who now looks like he is also in a daze.

“Derrick? Derrick Mallow.”

“Come out of it, Derrick,” Greta demands while letting the window down to shout at the old gypsy man.

“Mr. Miller, you all right?”

The old man shakes his head and turns toward the SUV and says, “You are too late. They have removed everything and the people have been murdered by the mist.”

Greta gets out of the SUV, turns, looks at Mallow, sighs, and walks to where the old man is standing. The old man is trembling and panting. He looks at Greta and then at Mallow sitting in the SUV and points toward town.

“Those who aren’t supposed to be here…are gone…now. Soon the mist will take us all. You two are good people, but you need to leave this town to protect…yourselves. He has already been touched by the evil that lingers inside the mist. Take him home now…or it will be, too late,” the old man says to Greta as he begins walking toward town.

“Can we give you a lift, sir?” Greta asks.

The old man does not reply and Greta turns her attention back to Mallow still sitting in the SUV in a daze. Then she hears a loud noise coming from the direction the old man is walking. She turns and looks and the old man is gone.

Greta shakes her head and thinks, what the hell is going on here?

She walks over to the driver-side window of the SUV and taps on the glass. Mallow jumps and turns the wheel like he is still trying to swerve to keep from hitting the old man.

He finally is aware of what is happening. He lets down the window, looks at Greta, and says with a worried look on his face, “Did I hit him?”

Greta sighs, puts her hand on Mallow’s shoulder, and says reassuringly, “No, you didn’t hit him.”

Mallow gets out of the SUV and looks at the vacant property that was Rogers Boat Rentals. He is perplexed as to why there are “Gone Out Of Business” signs all around the property boundaries.

Greta leans against the driver-side door of the SUV. She is concerned about Mallow, and about what the old man had said. This is something she never encountered before in her years as a detective.

What caused Mallow to go into the daze, and why was the old man standing in the middle of the road, she thought as she sighed and rubbed her palm through her hair.

A few minutes later an old pickup truck is coming down the road.
